Senate Bill 29

In response to Ohio Senate Bill 29 (SB 29), the Weathersfield Local School District is committed to ensuring transparency regarding how we handle student data and technology use in the district. 
The district, either directly or through a technology provider, is electing to generally monitor all school-issued devices (as that term is defined by R.C.  3319.325). The Weathersfield Local School District generally monitors these features for the noncommercial education  purpose of instruction, technical support, and/or exam proctoring. Additionally, these features are generally monitored as a necessary precaution for preventing and/or responding to health concerns, and threats to life or safety.

What is Senate Bill 29?

Ohio Senate Bill 29 was enacted to protect student data privacy and ensure that parents are informed about how student information is handled by schools. The bill outlines several requirements for school districts, including:

  • Parental Notifications: Schools must provide clear notice to parents on how student devices are monitored, what student data is shared with third parties, and which vendors have access to this data.
  • Vendor Agreements: Only vendors with approved data privacy agreements are permitted to handle student information. These agreements ensure that student data is used securely and only for educational purposes.
  • Device Monitoring: Schools must monitor student devices for safety, instructional support, and compliance with federal regulations such as the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) to qualify for E-rate funding.
How does the Weathersfield Local School District comply?

At Weathersfield Local Schools, we take student privacy seriously. Our compliance with SB29 includes the following measures:

  • Monitoring of Student Devices: We use Securly to monitor district-issued devices for safety and educational purposes. This ensures compliance with CIPA and secures vital funding through the E-rate program.
  • Approved Vendor List: We only work with vendors who have signed Data Privacy Agreements. Click here to view a complete list of approved vendors.
  • Parental Notifications: We provide annual and as-needed notices to parents regarding device monitoring and data sharing policies.
